Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently declared Quebec a "nation within Canada". We are supposed to be cool with this because changing political realities, according to the Tories, require this recognition. Whose political realities? Certainly not Canadian realities, because close to two thirds of Canadians reject this move.

Well Darlings,
The time is fast approaching. Christmas. Peace on Earth and Goodwill to All Men. Perhaps I should broaden my circles, as it seems far from that wherever I go. We see our pensioners going without food and turning off their heating in order to pay their council tax. A tax that one in four of them has difficulty in paying. Help the Aged are campaigning for the government to reinstate the £200 discount for pensioners to help them at this time of year. I guess they must have more faith in the goodwill of our government than most people. This discount was given to older people before the 2005 General Election, and withdrawn afterwards. Not a lot of goodwill in that was there? It smacks of a pre-election bribe to win the pensioners' votes.

What a world we live in. Let's look at Iraq. We know the President said ostensibly that the reason for invading was to find weapons of mass destruction, and prevent Saddam Hussein from using them. His removal from office could create a new democratic Iraq. America invaded and found no weapons of mass destruction - not even a hint of them.

I've been thinking again. I know some of my readers regard that as a dangerous thing. For instance, the guy who ended his last letter to me with a "your hypocrisy knows no bounds". I get these sorts of letters all the time.
But, I have been thinking and, of course, I have been thinking about America's obsession with shutting down the Mexican-American border. You would wonder why I don't tire of this rhetoric and the reason is simple. America needs the likes of your humble and gracious columnist reminding them to get out of that box of uncritical thinking and untested assumptions.
